Fun Friday

Each week we will have a goal to set aside 15-20 minutes for Fun Friday. Students who have completed their homework for the week will get to participate. The class enjoyed listening to music and building race tracks. They are learning about incline planes, ramps, velocity, teamwork, and much more through this "playing".

Buddy Reading

Students partnered up to buddy read the story Ramona and her Father. This week we are focusing on character analysis. 

ELM: Communities

This week we are starting our first ELM project in Social Studies. Students were placed into groups, created a team name, and chose team jobs. They are excited to create a brochure about McKinney that will be placed in the Library.

Grandparent's Day Lunch

Today we had several grandparents join us for lunch. The kids were so excited to have a special visitor. Thanks to all of the grandparents who were able to make it today. Big hugs to those who live far away...we missed you!

Spalding Phonograms {er, ir, ur, work, ear}

Students are learning phonograms and helpful rules for reading and spelling this year called Spalding.   We learned Rule #8 which is for the /r/ sound. There are 5 different combinations that make the /r/ sound: er, ir, ur, work, ear

We discussed the sentence: Her first nurse works early.

Here they are practicing a game with a partner. Try quizzing them at home.

Dress Like a Marshal

 We had our 1st dress-up day at school. Students dressed like a Marshal. Below is a pic of my homeroom and Mrs. Baird's homeroom.

I can't wait to see what dress-up dun we get next month!

Class Rules + Owl Name

Every year I ask students to help me set rules/expectations for our classroom. They have an idea of what rules they should be following and how they can be successful in school. I gave them 3 categories: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. Then they thought of rules they thought we should have for each category. 

(The poster with the green marker is switch class and the blue marker is my homeroom class. This helps me with organization of nearly 40 students.)

I also have an Awesome Owl each year. It is a class "pet" that we have. I watch the class to see who is making good choices, being a leader, helping others, etc. Once student then gets to bring the owl home for the weekend and completes an entry with photos. They get to share it with the class on Monday in addition to getting to be line leader and a special helper. Everyone loves that the Awesome Owl gets to sit on an exercise balance ball for the week instead of a classroom chair. This year Mrs. Baird and I will discuss who is going to be Awesome Owl for the week.

Since I have 2 classes, I bought 2 owls. I had each class brainstorm a name for the owl during our Community Circle. Then students voted on their favorite name. The switch class has an owl named Cherry Berry Ashton McClure. My homeroom's class owl is Obama Nightwing McClure.
